According to the 2010 Report to the Nation on Occupational Fraud and Abuse by the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners: "Most occupational fraudsters are first time offenders. Only 15% of the fraudsters in our study had a previous conviction for a fraud-related offense." The report also noted that, "Small businesses suffer disproportionately large losses due to occupational fraud and abuse. The median cost experienced by small businesses was $160,000.00 or 5% of annual revenue. This was higher than the median loss experienced by all but the very largest organizations. Small businesses are less likely to be able to survive such losses and should better protect themselves from fraud."

The report defines Occupational Fraud as, "The use of one's occupation for personal enrichment through the deliberate misuse or misapplication of the employing organization's resources or assets."

Ken Wilson of Wilson Investigative Services is here to help you protect yourself and your business from fraud.

ETHICAL COMPLIANCE INVESTIGATION:

Allegations of ethical misconduct must be investigated promptly and professionally. Failure to do so may subject the employer to civil or criminal sanctions.

CIVIL AND CRIMINAL INVESTIGATIONS:

In order for your case to receive the attention it deserves by law enforcement, some criminal violations must be investigated by the employer before law enforcement and the prosecuting attorney will get involved. In most civil cases, you will need an investigator to assist legal counsel.

EMPLOYEE MISCONDUCT INVESTIGATIONS:

"Ken is not simply a financial fraud investigator; he has broad experience and contacts concerning investigation in general. He is detailed and thorough in whatever his assignment and is one of the most effective witnesses I have encountered in my career."

~ Fred Caruso, Washington State Assistant Attorney General and former Spokane County Deputy Prosecutor (1997)

These investigations include harassment, discrimination, hostile workplace and other types of allegations made by one employee against another employee, supervisor or vendor. Federal and state laws mandate a timely, thorough and unbiased investigation.

PRE-EMPLOYMENT SCREENING:

Check personal, educational and employment references, as well as financial and criminal backgrounds when appropriate.

CUSTOMIZED "RISK ASSESSMENTS" FOR FRAUD:

Determine how to minimize your business' internal and external risks from becoming a victim of occupational fraud and employee abuse. May reduce insurance premiums.

CUSTOMIZED TRAINING PROGRAMS:

Ongoing training for employees is the least expensive, preventative measure available to reduce and mitigate your exposure to problems before they happen. Video based and instructor led training is available on a multitude of topics.

INTERNAL POLICY REVIEW AND DEVELOPMENT:

Small businesses often do not have the luxury of having someone dedicated to writing policies. However, not having adequate policies in place will subject your business to civil and governmental liability. Ken will assist you in developing policies to prevent problems before they occur.
